Abstract
Background: In the central nervous system (CNS), an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory pathways may lead to epileptic seizures, the recurrent, periodic, and unpredictable occurrence of which characterizes the catastrophic neurological condition known as epilepsy. While IL-1β has been shown to have a proconvulsive impact in animal models, its natural antagonist, IL-1RA, has been shown to have a potent anticonvulsant function. Objectives: to measure interleukin 1beta as inflammatory biomarker in children with intractable epilepsy and to evaluate the diagnostic & prognostic value of this biomarker. Patients and methods: This comparative cross section research was done on 60 children (30 with intractable epilepsy and 30 with medically controlled epilepsy as control group). Subjects were recruited from Pediatric department Benha University Hospital, during the period from January 2022 to September 2022. Results: there was a substantial differences between groups concerning Family history of epilepsy, Criteria of disease in the epileptic group (except Type of seizures), Anthropometric measurements, Radiological assessment and EEG in the studied groups and Performance of IL-1B to detect patients with prolonged seizures. There was no substantial differences amongst groups concerning age, sex, IL-1B in the studied groups and Correlation between IL-1B and clinical data in the epileptic group (except Duration of fits). Conclusion: The results of this research revealed no substantial variance amongst interactable epileptic patients & controlled epilepsy patients concerning IL-1β level. However, IL-1β could detect epileptic patients with prolonged seizures and there was a significant positive association among IL-1B & duration of fits.
