Abstract

Background: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) involves a diverse array of genetic disorders that progressively impair the retina’s photoreceptors, with rod cells being affected initially, ultimately leading to a gradual decline in vision.Objective: This investigation designed to assess various anterior segment parameters in individuals diagnosed with RP by employing Scheimpflug imaging technique, with a comparative analysis against a control group of healthy subjects.Subjects and Methods: In this cross-sectional, comparative analysis, 40 participants were allocated evenly into two groups: 20 cases with retinitis pigmentosa and 20 healthy control subjects. The investigation was conducted at the Ophthalmology Center, Benha University Hospitals, located in Benha, Qalyubia, Egypt, from December 2022 to December 2023. Results: Evaluation using Scheimpflug imaging demonstrated statistically significant differences between the RP and the controls in several anterior segment parameters, including best-corrected visual acuity, keratometric readings (K1, K2, and Kmax), central corneal thickness, thinnest corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, chamber angle, as well as keratometric indices such as IHD and ISV. Conversely, no significant differences were noticed between the groups concerning age, gender distribution, astigmatism levels, and ARTmax. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate that individuals with RP exhibit notable alterations in anterior segment parameters when compared to healthy controls. These results underscore the need for further investigations to confirm and elucidate the clinical implications of these observations.
